The new front door to your website
For the past 20 years, SEO meant optimizing for Google's crawler. You'd write title tags, build backlinks, and make sure Googlebot could index your pages. That playbook still matters, but there's a new class of visitor that plays by different rules.
AI agents don't browse like humans. They don't scroll, they don't click through navigation menus, and they don't care about your hero image. They want structured, machine-readable information they can extract quickly and confidently.

What AI agents actually look for
AI agent readiness comes down to five areas. Get these right and your website becomes a source that agents trust and cite. Get them wrong and agents skip you entirely — or worse, misrepresent what you do.
1. Structured data
This is the single biggest factor in AI agent readiness. Structured data (Schema.org markup, JSON-LD) gives agents explicit, unambiguous information about your content. Instead of guessing that a block of text is a product description, agents can see it labeled as a Product with a name, price, description, and review rating.
Common types that matter:
- Organization — who you are, where you're located, how to contact you
- Product — what you sell, pricing, availability
- Article — blog posts with author, date, topic
- FAQ — questions and answers agents can extract directly
- HowTo — step-by-step instructions
If you have zero structured data on your site, you're asking every AI agent to guess what your content means. Most won't bother.
2. Robots.txt and AI bot rules
Your robots.txt file controls which bots can access your site. Many site owners don't realize that AI agents use specific user-agent strings — ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot-Extended, and others.
Some websites accidentally block AI agents by using overly broad disallow rules. Others intentionally block them without understanding the tradeoff: if you block AI crawlers, you don't show up in AI-generated answers. Period.
Check your robots.txt right now. If it says Disallow: / for these user agents, you've opted out of the AI discovery channel entirely.
3. Content structure and accessibility
AI agents parse your HTML. The cleaner your markup, the better they understand your content.
What helps:
- Semantic HTML — use
h1,h2,h3tags properly (not just styled divs) - Alt text on images — agents can't see images, but they can read descriptions
- Clear hierarchy — one
h1per page, logical heading nesting - Descriptive link text — "Read our pricing guide" beats "click here"
- Accessible tables — if you present data in tables, use proper

Sites built with accessibility in mind are almost always more AI-agent-friendly too. The same principles that help screen readers help AI crawlers.
4. Performance and response times
AI agents have timeout thresholds. If your page takes 8 seconds to load because of render-blocking JavaScript, an agent may abandon the request before it ever sees your content.
Key metrics:
- Time to First Byte (TTFB) under 500ms
- Fully rendered content available without requiring JavaScript execution
- No aggressive interstitials — popups and modals that block content access trip up agents the same way they frustrate humans
Server-side rendering or static generation is a major advantage here. If your content only exists after a client-side React app finishes hydrating, many AI agents will see a blank page.
5. Metadata and meta tags
Beyond traditional SEO meta tags, AI agents look for signals that help them understand content authority and freshness:
- Canonical URLs — tells agents which version of a page is authoritative
- Last-modified dates — agents prefer fresh content
- Author information — establishes expertise signals
- Clear page titles and descriptions — the first thing agents read to decide if a page is relevant
Common mistakes that tank your AI readiness
Most websites make at least two of these errors:
- No structured data at all — the most common gap, especially on marketing sites and SaaS landing pages
- Blocking AI bots in robots.txt — sometimes inherited from a template or set by a previous developer
- Content locked behind JavaScript — single-page apps that serve empty HTML shells
- Missing alt text — especially on product images and diagrams that contain critical information
- Broken or missing API endpoints — if you have a product, agents increasingly look for programmatic access points
- Stale sitemaps — your sitemap says you have 200 pages but half return 404s
The frustrating part is that most of these are quick fixes. A few hours of work can move you from invisible to highly visible in AI agent results.
